Lip augmentation is a procedure that can improve the volume, structure and shape of the lips. It can also reduce fine lines surrounding the lips. The most common filler used in the lips is hyaluronic acid. This is a natural substance found in the body that can re-volumize the lip.
There are a number of fillers that can be used in the lips including Restylane®, Restylane® Silk, Juvederm® Ultra and Juvederm® Ultra Plus. Many of these fillers contain Lidocaine in them which helps minimize the discomfort associated with the procedure. In addition, topical Lidocaine or dental blocks can make the procedure nearly painless for most patients.Lip
Hyaluronic acid fillers provide long lasting but not permanent results. The filler can last from 2-9 months. The longevity of these products depends on the type of filler used and results vary in each individual. Swelling and bruising after the procedure is typically short-lived and minimal. Injections can be done gradually over time to achieve the desired results.
As we age, the upper lip begins to thin, the border of the lip and Cupid’s bow appears less defined. Natural-looking lip augmentation can be accomplished using a small amount of product. Fillers can also improve asymmetry and minimize lipstick bleed by repletion of volume.
Minimizing alcohol, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, or Aleve for approximately a week can reduce the risk of swelling and bruising. You may want to avoid planning social events for 48 hours after the treatment. Post-treatment, you may have some redness, swelling, bruising and tenderness. This typically resolves within 2-10 days.
If you’ve had cold sore around the mouth, the treatment may provoke an outbreak. Oral medications such as Valtrex or Acyclovir can help prevent the outbreaks that can occur with treatments.
