Botox® & Fillers – Q&A with Dr. Legere

Q: What is the difference between Botox® and filler?
A: Botox® and fillers are used to minimize signs of aging. Botox® is a purified protein that targets muscles that form wrinkles. It relaxes these muscles temporarily and prevents lines and wrinkles. Facial fillers help lift skin that is collagen-depleted and can improve aging that results from volume loss. Botox® is the best choice to prevent wrinkles that occur with motion. It is typically placed in between the eyebrows, around the eyes and on the forehead. Facial fillers address areas which are hollow or volume depleted and can provide fullness to these areas. Both can be used together and can make you appear refreshed and revitalized.

Q: How long does Botox® last?
A: Typically the effects of Botox® last about three months. The placement of the Botox® and the dosage can affect the duration. Lower doses allow for more movement of the muscle but can result in the Botox® wearing off quickly. If you’ve never done Botox® before it may be best to start with fewer units at first and adjust the dose to the desired longevity and results.

Q: How can I keep my skin looking healthier and younger?
A: I have been asked by patients about what I use on my own skin to help improve its appearance. I remind patients that application of daily sunscreen like EltaMD® UV clear on the face and neck is important in minimizing UV damage to the skin. I also use the EltaMD® Cleanser which has an enzyme and amino acid blend that loosens makeup, oil and other impurities on the skin and in the pores. The SkinMedica® Retinol Complex 1.0 diminishes wrinkles and the TNS Serum improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, skin tone and texture. Ask us what products would work best for your skin type.
